ABSTRACT

I have tried to take a straightforward approach to the issue of everyday safety and only use jargon or technical terms when I can find no sensible alternative. When jargon and technical terms are used, I try to explain them. You will also notice that the book is not dependent upon references to Acts of Parliament, Regulations, Approved Codes of Practice or Guidance (these are titles of particular sorts of documents). If you were to ask the Stationery Office for an official publication about an aspect of health and safety at work you would possibly get Regulations, Approved Codes of Practice and Guidance all bound into one. You might find it helpful to get hold of some official publications; there is a list of ones that I and other people have found helpful at the back of the book. For the most part, my experience in working in and with schools over many years now has been that there is an underlying logic to the management of health and safety and that once you understand how the logic works you can usually get things right.
