ABSTRACT

Looking fearfully over the edge of the chasm, he sees deep down below the missing lamb, plaintively bleating. But even as he carefully descends into the chasm the terrified sheep runs further into the newly opened passages into the earth. Plucking up his courage, Gyges follows and sees to his astonishment in the half gloom a massive bronze shape, like a horse, apparently released by the earthquake from its subterranean prison. Forgetting his sheep now, and investigating further, Gyges manages to clamber into the bronze horse through some doors. Inside, to his horror, is a corpse of something like a man, only larger. And on its finger, is an equally massive ring. Terrified by now, but determined to seize something as a record of his discovery, Gyges prises, with difficulty, the ring off the man’s finger, and half-scrambles, half-runs back to the surface. As he gets there, the earth heaves again and the chasm closes.
