ABSTRACT

The Judge eventually accepts a proposal from Mr Megasoft’s lawyers that the computer should be brought into the courtroom and allowed to speak for itself.

Now Deep Thought was a very powerful computer, and could say ‘Hello, Mr Megasoft’ to its master, and perform useful tasks like boil the kettle for some coffee whenever he came into the room, but this was a task to stretch even its multi-tasking natural dialogue voice recognition system. It was being required to convince a jury that, as a computer, it was really capable of having a mind of its own. The jury confer amongst themselves and then start asking questions.
