ABSTRACT

Arthur looks at this and sees that it is good. However, he thinks, it still doesn’t really sum up the sensitivity and subtlety of his own case, and he modifies his theory slightly to allow people like himself, Plato, and all the Buddhists, to follow an alternative path in which it is possible to transcend this prompting and simply contemplate reality without striving and pain. ‘Company,’ he writes, ‘is a fire at which to warm oneself at a distance.’
