ABSTRACT
For children who are at the beginning stage of learning English, there is often a period (sometimes quite a long one) when they speak very little, especially in class or a group. This is often because the children are listening and developing understanding before they commit themselves to speech. They may talk first in less formal situations, perhaps to other children in the playground.
