ABSTRACT

In this chapter, which looks at relating experience, vocational competence and academic knowledge to accreditation through the process known as the Assessment of Prior Learning or APL, the tone and purpose is pragmatic rather than philosophical. The chapter covers, what the Assessment of Prior Learning is, how it is done and how far practice is established. It also covers how far, if at all, APL offers new ways and means for adults to obtain credible recognition for what they have learned outside formal education and training. This issue is addressed specifically in relation to women’s access to accreditation.
