ABSTRACT
Approaches to environmental protection reflect local conditions and national characteristics and traditions. Initially the objective of environmental protection was preservation of ecosystems from destruction, but later the main concern was the safety and comfort of human beings. The chemical industry is increasingly subject to legislation designed to protect the environment and the public. It is a relatively safe industry and ICI has adopted measures to ensure that it operates in a safe and environmentally acceptable manner.
