ABSTRACT

The selection and hiring of employees and the evaluation of jobs is of course a management function. The process has evolved from a simple interview of a prospective candidate by a foreman or line manager to a complex procedure conducted by human resources personnel and their specialist advisors and assistants. The simple interview attempts in the subjective judgment of the interviewer to determine the applicant’s suitability to do the task assigned to him. In small companies, where the jobs are few and tasks well known, and where even the candidate may be well known to the interviewer, it may serve a valuable purpose. In large companies, where jobs are many and tasks complex, the simple interview has to be replaced by a multivariate procedure which attempts to ensure that the applicant meets all the prescribed requirements for hiring.
