ABSTRACT
The development in Shaw’s political outlook after 1918 can be approached through the one major play he worked on during the Great War, namely Heartbreak House.1 Modelled as it is on Chekhov, the play is among the most complex Shaw wrote, combining a wide range of themes and sentiments to create ‘A Fantasia in the Russian Manner on English Themes’.
