ABSTRACT
Various attempts were made at the time to find a term which best described the chaotic condition of Germany after the collapse of the Third Reich. The most apt term, oddly enough, coined by two French authors, was rendered into German as Jahr null.' It is hard to find an adequate description of that anticlimatic year in all its human, material and historical aspects. The determination to survive was paramount and was reflected in bitter and often crude satire.
