ABSTRACT

Platinum (Pt) is a member of Group VIII metals of the Periodic Table. It is a silvergray, lustrous, malleable, and ductile precious metal that is of high commercial value due to its high resistance to most corrosive agents. Platinum salts are commonly used as catalysts in automotive and chemical industries. Platinum is generally non-toxic in the metallic state, but the soluble halide salts are highly reactive. Exposure to the soluble halide salts of platinum can result in hypersensitivity-allergy reactions in susceptible individuals.
