ABSTRACT

This chapter tries to give teacher a basic understanding of what the internet is, how it works and what that means for classroom use for which an element of hands-on, situationalised and contextualised application is required. The 1990s have witnessed a signicant development in the educational use of mass media: the discovery of the existence of the internet by educators, the general public and, of course, in business and the economy. Web browsers allow teacher to input a known URL and thereby access the respective web space. But users are often not sure about the exact location of the desired information and have only a vague idea about the exact type and nature of information that is available. Computer-based applications can clearly contribute to all these stages of the writing process. CMC can, therefore, be seen to make a genuine contribution to the learning process and the development of literacy skills across the curriculum.
