ABSTRACT
Under Alice Morris’s intellectual leadership-and with the financial support she, her husband, and Cottrell’s Research Corporation provided to IALA from its founding in 1924 to its dissolution in 1953-IALA developed quickly into a serious, scholarly organization that supported empirical research in three major areas: linguistics, sociology, and education.
