ABSTRACT
Among American women who held Ph.Ds in the years that Adelaide Hahn was on the faculty at Hunter College, more had received their undergraduate degrees there than from any other college in the United States (Hunter College Web Page at www.hunter.ccny.edu). This remarkable fact helps to explain why standards of excellence for Hunter’s educational programs were of such paramount importance to Hahn that the college and her colleagues commented on it in print: ‘as an alumna and as a member of the faculty, she guarded zealously the reputation of her Alma Mater’ (Hunter Alumni Quarterly Fall 1967, p. 5); ‘Adelaide was always ready to do battle for Hunter, her Alma Mater whose unsullied reputation had to remain pristine’ (Hunter Alumni News vol. II, no. 1, October 1967, no page number).
