ABSTRACT
Portal hypertension represents the most common and severe complication of chronic progressive liver diseases (including cirrhosis of the liver, hepatic schistosomiasis and portal vein thrombosis). The complications that occur as a consequence of portal hypertension determine, in most patients, the clinical course of their liver disease.
