ABSTRACT
Many of the valid criticisms of the British planning system arise from the tough and crude form of urban containment that has been adopted since 1947. Green Belts have been used not only to contain specific cities but also to influence attitudes to development in rural areas that have no special designation at all. While the policy has suited county interests and has been very simple to follow because it is such a crude device, the reasons for its introduction are no longer valid.
