ABSTRACT

Volcanoes are exciting. To witness the spectacle of a great volcanic eruption is a thrilling, although dangerous, privilege. Violent eruptions can outstrip all other natural processes, releasing more energy than thunderstorms or hurricanes, and, at the same time, giving us the macabre sensations of catastrophe and disaster. But, these awesome eruptions also reward our aesthetic senses by creating volcanoes that are amongst the most graceful and beautiful of all the world’s landscapes.
