ABSTRACT

On the way to Vulcanello, other small volcanic features are grouped together in a beautifully situated zone on a main fault line caused by a crack in the Earth’s crust stretching northwards from Fossa to Lipari Island. The Porto di Levante is guarded by the Faraglione, a decayed volcanic remnant, 56m high, altered by volcanic spring waters. Alongside it is a large pit filled with warm pale-grey mud about a metre deep, which bubbles continually. Tourists bathe in the mud and spread it all over their bodies because it is reputed to cure both rheumatism and ugliness. On the little Acqua Calda beach to the north, hot spring waters bubble from the sand and the sea in long fissure-lines. These too have curative properties, but they can also be extremely uncomfortable to sit upon.
