ABSTRACT

The magnitude of tourism in border regions is immense, and many of the world’s most popular attractions are located near borders or right on them. Several authors have described the development of tourism in these unique peripheral settings (e.g. Baerresen 1983; Boyd 1999; Butler 1996; Essex and Gibb 1989; Gibbons and Fish 1987; Herzog 1990; Krakover 1985; Lintner 1991a; Mikus 1986; Minghi 1981; Ruppert 1979; Slowe 1991; Timothy 1995b; 2000a).
