ABSTRACT

Table 6.1 details the change in the British population of pensionable age over a 140-year period. It shows the numbers of such people, the percentage of the total population they represent, and in the final column an indication of the speed at which the proportion of elderly people in the population is increasing (this is calculated by taking the increase in the numbers of pensionable age from one census to the next, expressing this as a percentage of the former, and dividing by ten to obtain an annual rate).
