Comorbidity as a key concept The diagnostic system of modern psychiatry is simultaneously a major advance and a crucial weakness. On the one hand, the development of operational criteria for psychiatric disorders has allowed clinicians to make diagnoses with a reliability that is as impressive as that in other areas of medicine. Furthermore, such criteria have fostered a range of fundamental research, beginning with epidemiological surveys showing the prevalence and costs of mental illness.
