ABSTRACT

The main organic basis for this problem is bilateral vestibular damage caused by streptomycin or gentamicin. The diagnosis is usually evident from the history of drug exposure. Many patients who have had an acute vestibular insult develop a chronic state of dizziness and a lack of confidence in walking. Typically they express fears of walking out of doors unless accompanied. There is some evidence that early referral for vestibular rehabilitation or balance retraining can be fruitful in lessening the duration and severity of the patient’s symptoms.
