ABSTRACT

Panic disorder has been found to have an association with a variety of medical conditions. This may be the result of patients with panic disorder presenting their symptoms more readily to the doctor. The presence of comorbid medical conditions may increase the severity of symptoms and worsen the prognosis of panic disorder. All the conditions in the upper section of Table 6 may be comorbid with panic disorder, and make it more difficult to make an accurate diagnosis. Thus, although it is important for the physician to consider the diagnosis of panic disorder in a patient presenting with a variety of physical symptoms, it is equally important for the psychiatrist to consider the physical diseases that mimic panic disorder.
