ABSTRACT

On completing the research on the masula documented in Chapter 5, it was a logical next step to study another sewn boat in the same approximate geographical locality to discover what similarities, if any, might exist. The madel paruwa of Sri Lanka was an obvious choice. Not only is it a sewn plank boat, it is also, like the masula, a beach seining boat. The research on the madel paruwa was undertaken in January 1986, when the coastline between Kalpitiya and Kirinda (Fig. 6.1) was surveyed specifically to locate and record variations on the madel paruwa. Aspects of the results were originally published in Kentley and Guneratne (1987).
