ABSTRACT

Reordering, reframing, extending, reducing – so far we have encountered an impressive variety of structural changes which were licensed by parametrized processing conditions determining optimal relevance in German and English. But even if these changes were cross-clausal, they occurred within the borders of sentences. It was only in the last example, with its ‘liberal’ deletion of the matrix clause, that sentence boundaries were affected. The result of the reduction, the question, had been adjoined to the preceding sentence by a colon.
