ABSTRACT
When we set out walking the tightrope, we agreed to close our eyes to any special uses of language we might encounter in translating. Even so, the examples we have been looking at were colourful enough. They were all subject to the default version of the Principle of Optimal Relevance, however. That is, linguistic means were used so as to optimize processing conditions in the original as well as in the translation. The use of language, though, can also be subject to other principles, which may in one way or another relativize optimality.
