ABSTRACT

I have established in previous chapters the importance of appreciating people’s style as one aspect of coming to know them, and discussed the structure of empathy in textually-mediated relationships such as CMC. This chapter takes up the issue of the affective and performative possibilities of CMC. Its function is as a twin to the previous chapter, which argued for the possibility of empathetic experience of others in CMC. It aims to establish that textual relations allow people to engage in relationships that allow action and interaction.
