ABSTRACT

The following are translations in English of some of Saichi’s utterances. As I have said before, there are several thousands of such items in his journals, and there is no doubt that they are good material for students of religious experiences. My attempt here is, however poor the translations, to afford the reader a glimpse into Saichi’s inner life. Unless one has a thorough mastery of both languages, Japanese and English, it is impossible to convey to the English reader the deep underlying feelings characterising Saichi as one of the most conspicuously myōkōnin type of Shin followers.
