ABSTRACT

Anita Roddick is the most successful, outspoken and controversial of all the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year Award winners. With nearly 2,000 outlets in forty-nine countries her company, The Body Shop, now in its 27th year, is the most consistently profitable retail enterprise to date created by a British woman. A business begun out of necessity in Brighton, so that she could support herself and her two little girls whilst her husband was on a year-long adventure, has grown into an internationally recognized example of how business success can be combined with ethical behaviour. Her leadership of a company that incorporates community services, ecological concerns and social justice issues has attracted worldwide attention for nearly three decades.
