ABSTRACT

On 11 September 2001, while the civilized world reeled from theterrorist attacks in New York City and Washington DC, Dame Marjorie Scardino, chief executive of Pearson plc, responded swiftly in the interest of the employees. Sixty-five of them worked for Pearson’s New York Institute of Finance on the 17th floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center and all got out safely. The next day she sent an e-mail to each of Pearson’s 28,000 employees. It said: ‘Dear everyone, I want to make sure you know that our priority is that you are safe and sound in body and mind. Be guided by what you and your families need right now. There is no meeting you have to go to and no plane you have to get on if you don’t feel comfortable doing it. For now look to yourselves and to your families, and to Pearson to help you any way we can.’
