ABSTRACT

Although Phyllis Cunningham is by nature introverted and reserved, shewas never shy when it came to fulfilling her role as chief executive. ‘When I have a cloak on that says “Chief Executive” or “Chairman”, I can walk into a room and start talking with people I do not know, or give a speech to thousands at a conference. If it is planned and part of my role, I can do it. Although I would not normally stand up with a mike and ask questions at a meeting, if there is something to do connected with my role – like spontaneously giving a vote of thanks – I can do it. I am not intimidated.’
