ABSTRACT
In some areas of modern discourse analysis, and especially in the politically motivated branch known as critical discourse analysis, rhetoric enjoys a very evil reputation. Command of the techniques of persuasion is seen as one of the principal ways in which the powerful both express and reinforce their power over the powerless, for example in situations such as the courtroom, the doctor’s surgery or, most noticeably and dangerously, in the mass media.
