ABSTRACT

A very important part of performance management is self-evaluation by individuals. This will often lead into action research as a teacher notes a particular problem in his or her work and, in discussing it with the team leader, works out steps forward to solve the problem and then evaluates the outcome. Self-evaluation should be an ongoing part of the teacher's normal way of working. A good teacher spends time reflecting on what happened in his or her lessons. Teachers in secondary schools will also need to evaluate their work as form tutors. Teachers in management roles also need to evaluate their work as managers as well as their work as teachers. A somewhat different kind of self-evaluation will be needed in preparation for each teacher's review meeting with the team leader. There is a strong case for encouraging teachers to engage in action research, identifying problems in their classroom work and studying how to overcome them.
