Performance management starts with the appointment of staff. Getting the right people into the right jobs is essential for the success of the school. Try to get something into the advertisement which makes the school stand out as attractive to teachers and other staff because of what it seems to stand for. A tour of the buildings, particularly the rooms in which the successful candidate will be working, and the staff facilities. They need to get an honest picture, with difficulties and problems made plain. Some schools use pupils to take candidates on a tour of the school. Candidates can be asked to lead the group of candidates in a discussion on a topic which interests them, perhaps presenting a problem which they have encountered. This is particularly relevant for more senior posts where teachers will be acting as discussion leaders on many occasions.
