ABSTRACT

All staff need to be involved in a training programme for performance management and there will be a need for top-up training from time to time to make new members of staff acquainted with the school programme and to refresh people's ideas about the process. Teaching assistants and administrative staff will need to consider how they would like their work assessed and by whom. Teachers will need to consider how they would like information about their work in the form-tutor role assessed as well as their overall contribution to the life of the school in such activities as extra-curricular work. Both team leaders and other teachers need to be involved in the training, which in the first place involves teachers thinking together about what is involved in observing teaching. The team leader carries out a postobservation interview with the teacher on the basis of a case study, and the observer notes how he or she does this and gives feedback.
