ABSTRACT

The leading group with extremely high levels of military distrust about the Russian Federation and their future strategic intentions is Croatia and Poland. The feeling of being threatened by the Russian Federation is highest in Croatia (see Table 7.2). In 1992, 33 per cent of the Croatian population expressed some anxiety about the Russian Federation and their strategic intentions. That share increased tremendously over time and reached the level of 71 per cent of Croatians in 1996. One explanation for this steep increase could be the open support of the Russian Federation for the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the war in Bosnia.
