ABSTRACT

Assessment of pupils’ performance is a significant part of the role of all teachers, no matter what their subject. Assessment of attainment is critical to knowing whether or not your pupils are achieving similar standards to those achieved in equivalent institutions. Assessment of progress is necessary if you are to judge whether or not you have succeeded in your teaching efforts. Furthermore, although they may not like to admit it, assessment of their performance is also necessary if your pupils are to become effective learners. They need to know whether their work is meeting your expectations and what they need to do to improve. If your pupils are to become independent learners, taking responsibility for their own progress, they need effective feedback to help them to set targets for themselves.
