Privatizing the Turkish economy
The year 1980 was a watershed in the evolution of the Turkish modernization movement. It marks the end of top-down etatism, reviewed in Chapter 6, and the launching of economic liberalization and privatization of the economy. It is a major turning point when the nationalist ideology gave way to the ideology of the market place; power shifted from bureaucratic elites to market-oriented political elites willing to forge new alliances with corporate interests. This chapter briefly examines the post-1980 economic reforms, their implications and the latest phase of the Turkish identity search.
