ABSTRACT
In their first session with me, students looked at five first pages of novels, five opening credits of film videos and five initial sequences of narrative CD-ROM games. They were asked to say whether they would continue with this text if it were left entirely up to them, and to explain what kind of story they thought it would be, and why. Their responses were audiotaped and transcribed; their observations raise many interesting questions.
