ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a historical overview of the engagement of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) within the global economy to effect changes for the benefit of its members, ordinary working men and women worldwide. The chapter documents the strategies that the ICFTU has adopted to influence the international financial institutions (IFIs), who have come to play an increasingly determining role in the economic policies of developing and transition countries. It describes the close involvement of associated trade union bodies on all six continents in these advocacy efforts.
