ABSTRACT

The principle elements of Kayapó management have been previously described in some detail (Posey 1983c, 1985b, 1987a, 1995, 1997b), and include: (i) overlapping and interrelated ecological categories that form continua (ii) modification of ‘natural ecosystems’ to create ecotones; (iii) emphasis on long-term ecotone utilization (chronological ecotones); (iv) concentration on non-domesticated resources; (v) transfer of useful plant varieties between similar ecological zones; (vi) integration of agricultural with forest management cycles.
