ABSTRACT
When I arrived in the village of Gorotire in 1977, the Kayapó were still best known for their savageness and their distinctive stretched lips. The last group of these Amazonian Indians had been ‘pacified’ less than ten years before. The lip disk, sign of a valiant warrior, was in decline, but older men still wore their ‘big lips’ with pride.
