ABSTRACT
Piety could easily be represented as blindness or superstition. Such an attitude may be seen in the Middle Ages towards Judaism (the Synagogue is personified as a blindfolded woman, while the Church (Ecclesia) is blessed with sight).1 Sectarian attitudes, for instance, of Roman Catholics towards Protestants, and vice versa, tell a regrettably similar story in more recent times.
