ABSTRACT
In the eighteenth century the transport of goods depended on two principal sources of power: the wind and the horse. The harnessing of the wind was largely confined to coastal and estuarial shipping and will be considered in chapter 3. The full potentialities of horse power were realised on the inland waterways.
