It is clear that the development of women's sports is not a coherent, unified process, but riddled with complexities and contradictions. Nevertheless, women's historical struggle for increased opportunities has resulted in changes that only a few years ago were unimaginable: women are now participating in a vast range of sports with varied characteristics.1 Their radicalism is most powerfully symbolized by the inroads made into traditional male sports.
