chapter  2
Sports feminism
The Importance of gender
Pages 17

Some of the first feminist interventions in sports sociology occurred in North America during the 1970s. A number of books were written about women's sports at that time which, although weakly theorized (Gerber, Felshin, Berlin and Wyrick 1974; Kaplan 1979; Klafs and Lyon 1978; Oglesby 1978; Parkhouse and Lapin 1980; Twin 1979), represented an important reaction to the forms of male dominance in sports sociology discussed in Chapter 1. Feminist sports sociology was an element of a more general sports feminism centring on the efforts of practising sportswomen to unmask discrimination and to equalize opportunities with men.
