ABSTRACT
In the threesome of interpretation, the role of the interpreter as gobetween is necessarily a dual one-with a duty to both the other parties. In language interpretation, he or she has a duty to the speaker and a duty to the listener. In Environmental Interpretation, he has corresponding duties: he owes it to the Feature to understand what it has to say, and to the Visitor to express the chosen message in the clearest possible way. Both clarity and possibility will depend on a number of factors. Communication must depend upon, and be tailored to, both the external circumstances of the situation, and the internal requirements of the message itself.
