ABSTRACT

This paper discusses an approach to planning and monitoring the work of building design consultants.

Various factors may increase or decrease the need for the close planning and control of work. Design team leaders must be involved in planning, but the majority of design tasks need not be planned formally.

Measures of progress and efficiency are discussed, since these can help managers to decide how to use the time and man-hours which remain to be spent on a project. Progress cannot easily be assessed by drawn output. Information inputs, key design decisions and the coordination of design information should also be taken into account.

Where planning and control systems are introduced or modified, a planner and data analyst might be needed, together with a “champion” who ensures that everyone contributes effectively to setting up and using the system.
