Introduction

This is not a glossy coffee table book, with dramatic views of glamorous laboratory buildings such as Louis Kahn’s Salk Institute at La Jolla or Michael Hopkins’ Schlumberger lab in Cambridge. Nor does it concern itself with the external appearance of laboratory buildings, which in the author’s view ought like all buildings to reflect what is going on inside them: a building should say what it is.
