ABSTRACT

Reading a book, identifying someone’s face in a dark street, operating a lathe are all

examples of visual tasks. What they have in common is the need to detect and recognize

very small parts of the total visual field. Often a task must be continued for a long period;

sometimes the outcome of error is expensive or dangerous.
